i just came back from seeing a great film in the new directors/new films festival at lincoln center called "el hombre de al lado" and while i have many thoughts and impressions about the movie, i will let the women at skip rip or play manage the reviewing and analyzing. what i would like to examine is the title. in english, it was translated into "the man next door". something is indeed lost in this translation. yes, "el hombre de al lado" can mean, "the man next door" but it could also mean "the man next to you" which is pertinent to this movie given many things, including one of the final, very powerful, images where both men are actually sitting beside each other.
and of course this happens - when we try to translate something, not all of the meanings/feelings/references/sounds make their way into the new, foreign version of the original. sometimes the translation is of words into a different language, and other times it is of music into a different key, or of a reality into a memory.
