today was the 8th grade graduation at my school. it was also the last day of school. it was also the last day of my working at that school (except for tomorrow when i go in for meetings, but no more kids). in the next couple of weeks a lot more lasts coming up...and with them, many firsts.
one of the 8th graders talked about the words graduation and commencement in her speech today. how they are used interchangeably and yet refer to opposites. one being the culmination/end of something, and the other referring to a beginning. and of course, this dichotomy exists everywhere.
but because each also brings with it many feelings, it can be difficult to determine what those feelings are as they unfold simultaneously. the sadness of ending and the anticipation of beginning get confused. in an effort to protect one feeling we don't always allow ourselves to have the other.
