miracle of life
i was subbing in a 1st/2nd grade classroom today that has been studying birds. as part of their study the class got 12 fertilized chicken eggs to observe for a couple of weeks. 10 of them hatched on monday and are already spunky little chicks covered in fuzz and starting to grow feathers. the two never made it out were observed today.
the teacher laid the two eggs out in front of her while the class sat in a big circle around. she carefully poked the egg open and peeled off the shell to reveal the fetus. some of the kids were fascinated, some were disgusted, some were upset by the encounter with the unborn bird. one said something about the bird being dead, another said it was never born so it wasn't technically dead - an interesting discussion for such a young group.
i was surprisingly moved by the viewing. both fascinated by the scientific aspects (one bird was more developed than the other) and touched by how fragile the line between life and death can be
